Most folks recognize that 1st generation American night vision is equivalant to "2nd generation" Russian night vision. Designed to mount on an M14/M1A type rifle, it can be adapted to many rifle systems. 1st generation US scopes do NOT require IR illumination to work as most russian scopes do. However ANY night vision would benefit from additional IR illumination during very dark nights. This is a perfect "starter" Night vision unit or a great backup unit. I bought one and put it in an ammo can for EMP protection. With an ample supply of AA batteries and rechargables, I'm assured having night vision when it's needed. It is my "backup" NVD.
